Christopher Whitehead football success with TigerTurf
17/06/2009
Since its installation in August 2008, the TigerTurf football pitch at Christopher Whitehead Language College has proved to be a worthy investment.
This academic year has seen a string of success for sport, including most recently the Year 7 boys football team winning the ‘Under 12’s Worcestershire County Cup’ when they beat Baxter College of Kidderminster 4-0 in the final in May. In addition to this, the Year 9 boys football team won the Worcester City League and came runners up in the County Cup along with the Year 11 boys team. The girls football teams have also seen great improvements this year with both the under 13’s and under 16’s teams getting to the semi finals of the county cup.
Before the TigerTurf pitch was installed, sport lessons and after hours clubs would often be cancelled due to poor and unsafe pitch conditions from adverse weather.
Morale amongst the pupils is better than ever with a fresh approach to sport during curricular activities, greater participation in after school clubs and increased physical activity during break times.
Laurence Helme, the Schools Sport Coordinator said “The attitude towards the new pitch here is simply incredible. Both students and staff take great pride in the facility and it has increased hours of play both in the school and the community by up to 70%.We were also able to host the Tag Rugby tournament on the TigerTurf pitch during the Droitwich and Worcester Partnership Key Stage 4 Sports Festival. The feedback from all the players was outstanding and even with the poor weather leading up to the event, the pitch and the tournament were completely unaffected.”
