Pennsylvania’s Hopewell and Altoona School Districts Choose TigerTurf’s Premium Trophy Turf™ for New Athletic Fields
07/01/2009Hopewell High School (Aliquippa, PA) – The alma mater of Dallas Cowboys football legend Tony Dorsett and, more recently, Paul Posluszny, who currently plays for the Buffalo Bills after a stellar career at Penn State – renovated its entire stadium and wanted a product that would hold up to its active athletic program.
Don Short, athletic director for the Hopewell Area School District in Hopewell Township, did considerable research into companies and brands before choosing TigerTurf’s Trophy Turf.
“We wanted a reputable company with a good product and chose Trophy Turf because of its longevity and monofilament fiber construction,” said Short. “In my opinion, Trophy Turf is the best there is and a good fit for us.”
Short was especially interested in the turf’s monofilament technology – the most advanced on the market today with a heavier fiber weight that stands up beautifully on active sports fields, as well as the turf’s minimal “rubber splash” attribute.
Those same qualities attracted Altoona Area School District (Altoona, PA), which chose Trophy Turf for the district’s Roosevelt Field on the Altoona High School campus and for Mansion Park, the primary, off-campus game field for Altoona High School.
“We liked the turf because, number one, it came in at a good price, but we also wanted it because of the weight – 48 ounces versus 36 ounces – which has more fibers and all rubber infill,” says George Cardone, assistant superintendent for secondary education, Altoona Area School District. “We host 60 to 70 events a year – our fields get a lot of use, and we thought it was the better product.”
For hard-working high school stadiums, it’s the perfect solution. And for Don Short at Hopewell, the challenge now is managing all the activities and all the teams that want to play on it.
“We’ve got more than 30 events lined up already, including all the varsity boys and girls soccer games,” he says. “Before, we played one or two games here – now, it’s all of them. It’s a year-round field, and people are very excited to use it.”
