Academy Charter School dedicates new turf field
09/16/2010Cindy Hazlehurst - YourHub.com
Students at Academy Charter School kicked off their school year on a new synthetic turf field and track in a ribbon cutting ceremony August 20th.
The 60,000 square foot field and track is the result of an agreement forged between ACS and Town of Castle Rock enabling the school to purchase the field land directly from the town.
"I have to say that after nearly four and a half years of time and efforton this project, it isvery gratifying to see the kids on the field and enjoying it in a safe and healthy environment. To know that this field will be enjoyed by kids for years to come is something that everyone associated with ACS can be extremely proud of" said Clayton Watson, ACS Governing Board President.
The decision to install a turf field was largely driven by economics. The reduction of irrigation and maintenance is expected to save ACS $30,000 annually.
Principal Yvette Brown added, "This is a time to celebrate such a wonderful accomplishment that will not only serve our ACS students but the community at large. The ACS students and staff couldn't be prouder to have a cutting edge field that will promote our sports program and healthy lifestyles as well as the programs within the community for years to come."
Featuring a striped soccer field, three-lane track and long-jump pit, the field is used for the middle school athletics, P.E. class and recess. This new field replaces an uneven, sloped and pitted former grass field.
The project began shortly after the school closed for summer break in June, 2010. Thanks to the hard work of DLH Architecture, Academy Sports Turf, Natural Design Solutions, Arrow J Landscape & Design, MEH Consulting, Castle Rock Life Long Learning Center, and the help of our parent community the field was ready for use the first week of school.
