The most advanced synthetic turf currently on the market has come to community facility Waveny Park in New Canaan, Conn.
TigerTurf, a monofilament product from one of the world's largest manufacturers of advanced synthetic field and landscape systems, was installed at Waveny Park earlier this year by specialty sport field contractor Sports Construction Group (SCG).
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, SCG was chosen by the Town of New Canaan because of its ability to handle the entire project, from site work through turf installation, according to Tiger Mann, project manager on the job and Senior Engineer for the Town of New Canaan.
He said the Town chose a TigerTurf surface (manufactured by TigerTurf Americas, a wholly owned subsidiary of TigerTurf International) based on SCG's recommendation:
"It's top of the line turf, and it looks great. You can't see a single seam."
He added that Sports Construction Group "did a superb job installing it, even providing us with some alternatives - like value engineering -- to help reduce cost."
Mann said there was a problem with the top choke stone layer; it passed the permeability test in the morning, but in the afternoon it didn't drain. "SCG wasted no time in taking the turf out and putting a new choke stone layer in - at no charge. I was stunned. The field drains perfectly now," he added.
Mann said the turf's appearance is "fantastic. We're very pleased with the quality of the TigerTurf system, and the company got the turf to the site ahead of time, which was a boon given our short timeframe.
"I would definitely recommend SCG and TigerTurf for future projects. I've been doing this for 20 years and Sports Construction Group ranks in the top three companies I've worked with!"
Given the New Canaan community's reaction to the new system, Mann just might get another opportunity to work with the companies -- "The people in the community are so happy with the system they want to build a second one!" he noted.
