New turf surface at Roy Kidd Stadium near completion
07/20/2009Mike Clark, Director of Athletic Public Relations, EKU
The transformation from natural grass to synthetic turf is almost complete at Roy Kidd Stadium. On Monday, the first pieces of synthetic turf were put together on Hanger Field. The project is expected to be completed before Aug. 5, which is the first day of preseason camp for the Eastern Kentucky University football team.
“This is huge for everyone in the community as well as our team,” EKU football head coach Dean Hood said. “This could be a great venue for high school playoff football games and other community events that we could not do here when the field was grass. As for our team, I love the fact that everything is now centrally located [at Roy Kidd Stadium and the Moberly Building].”
Vescio SportsFields, based out of Lexington and owned by Richmond native Doug Vescio, has been working on the project since mid-March.
The SFII synthetic turf consists of plastic grass woven in a plastic carpet with a urethane backing, in-filled with crumb rubber and installed over a foot of crushed limestone. The field will have the Colonel logo at midfield with ‘Colonels’ in one maroon end zone and ‘Eastern’ in the other end zone.
