Soccer Complex Debuts In OP
08/30/2009Mike Markewinski, NBC Action News
After more than two years of waiting, the Overland Park Soccer Complex officially opens Tuesday, September 1st.
The 36-million dollar complex, located at 135th Street and Swizer, features 12 soccer fields, lights and scoreboards.
The fields contain 1.2 million square feet of synthetic turf. That’s enough to cover the front yard of about 460 homes in Overland Park, Kan.
Residents got a chance to check out the new complex Saturday night, three days before it opened.
One thing that grabbed a lot of attention is a special soccer ball in front of the complex.
The special ball weighs 12,230 pounds and is made of granite. It sits on a small fountain of water and allows anyone to push it in a circular motion.
The ball itself cost more than $150,000.
Even before the center opened, The United States Youth Soccer Association (US Youth Soccer) has announced that the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships will be played at the new Overland Park Soccer Complex, 135th and Switzer, July 20-25, 2010.
