Sportica, Inc. has completed Canada’s first installation of ProTrophy Turf artificial turf manufactured by TigerTurf Americas for Mill Woods Sports Park in the City of Edmonton, Alberta. The new field has secured a prestigious 2 Star certification from Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
Mill Woods Sports Park is located at 2730 66 Street in Edmonton. The new field opened for public use in July 2011 and already is being well received, according to Gary Chung, project coordinator for recreation facility development with the Department of Community Services at the City of Edmonton.
Sportica, an authorized dealer of TigerTurf Americas since January 2010, replaced natural grass and completed the installation of 113,750 square feet of ProTrophy Turf for the Mill Woods artifical turf sportsfield within a three-week timeframe. The 236-foot by 482-foot athletic field includes game lines for football, soccer and field hockey.
“ProTrophy Turf is manufactured at TigerTurf Americas’ facilities in Austin, Texas, with TenCate’s patented manufacturing process of monofilament turf fibers,” explained Bob Aurich, regional sales manager for TigerSports Americas, Inc.
TenCate is the leading manufacturer of synthetic turf components. TenCate’s patented manufacturing process is based on TenCate Monoslide™ XQ technology, which represents a new standard in monofilament fibers for maximum resilience and enhanced performance.
“TenCate’s XQ technology produces exceptional split resistance compared with conventional turf fibers, making it possible to create premium sports fields that are highly durable and excellent for play,” Aurich said.
Project Details
The City of Edmonton selected Sportica through a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
“For the Mill Woods project, the City of Edmonton was searching for a product that could accommodate a high volume of users while also providing a quality playing surface in all types of weather. Through our RFP process and by comparing product specifications, we determined that TigerTurf's ProTrophy Turf was the product that would best meet our needs,” Chung said. “With Sportica, we recognized extensive experience in installing artificial turf in a range of conditions, particularly those with a climate similar to Edmonton. Sportica was responsive to our needs and was able to accommodate a last minute addition of field hockey lines to the project scope without delays to the installation schedule.”
Chung said that athletes and coaches are enjoying the benefits of consistent, safe playing surface, noting that they appreciate the feel of the artificial turf and how well the surface responds in a variety of weather conditions given that Edmonton has experienced many days of rain. Chung expects usage of the new field to exceed 2,000 hours annually as compared with 600 hours of usage with the natural grass field.
“The resilience of the new surface will allow the playing season to extend earlier in the spring and later into the fall - rain, snow or shine,” Chung commented. “The aesthetics of the ProTrophy product have been a surprising benefit: more than our other existing artificial turf fields, we have received comments on how good the new ProTrophy field looks. The dual profile fibers and multi-tone colors incorporated in the product give a more natural look to the field. I've even been asked by the general public how they can have this product installed at their residences!”
