With less than five weeks before opening day, All-Pro Freight Stadium, the future home of Avon's Frontier League team, the Lake Erie Crushers, is on schedule to welcome baseball fans June 2.
The seats are being installed and numbered and the seams on the artificial turf are being finished, according to Paul Siegwarth, assistant general manager for the Crushers.
This Sunday, the next Grady Sizemore has his chance to step up to the plate when the Crushers have open tryouts for players at Avon Middle School. Tryout registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and tryout camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Avon Middle School, 3075 Stoney Ridge Road.
"Every once in a while you get lucky and discover hidden talent," Crushers spokeswoman Nicolle Meyer said. "So we may pick up another player or two."
Players must be at least 20 years old and not have their 27th birthday before Jan. 1, 2009, bring their own glove and bat and pay a $100 registration fee, Meyer said.
