North Harbour Hockey Association completed installation of Australasia’s first full-size TigerTurf WETT hockey surface last week at the Crown Relocations Stadium, Albany.
Traditional water-based hockey turfs, which are the standard for international play, require large amounts of water prior to a game to produce a playing surface that offers less bounce and greater ball control than dry surfaces. TigerTurf WETT technology is an environmentally friendly and economical solution that uses less water to produce the same playing conditions.

TigerTurf Technical Manager Don Crockett explains, “We developed TigerTurf WETT after the Federation of International Hockey (F.I.H.), the governing body of world hockey, called for the development of a turf that can be used for internationals and eliminated the need for water.”

“TigerTurf WETT uses advanced fibre technology exclusive to TigerTurf which promises high quality, greater durability, better playing characteristics and up to 50% less watering than the current non filled synthetic fields.”

TigerTurf Product Manager Blair Hopping explains that TigerTurf WETT has the potential to support the development of the game worldwide.

“The reduced water requirement not only makes TigerTurf WETT environmentally-friendly, it allows clubs around the world who can’t afford complex watering systems or who have water shortages to play a higher level of hockey, which helps to develop the game on a wider scale.”

Chief Executive of Harbour Hockey Darrell Simpson says, "We have had a long and mutually beneficial relationship with TigerTurf who have now installed five hockey turfs for us since 1989.”

“We aim to provide both local and international players with the best possible playing surfaces so it was an obvious choice for us to move to the next level of environmentally-friendly technology with the installation of the WETT surface."
