North Harbour Hockey replaces TigerTurf… with TigerTurf
29/09/2010Jos McKenzie
North Harbour Hockey is finally replacing its old Harbour #4 sand filled hockey field. After 22 years of loyal service, the turf is due to be lifted and replaced with a state-of-the-art TigerTurf WETT dressed surface in November.
A visionary decision made 22 years ago saw the installation of the second TigerTurf hockey pitch in New Zealand. The installation technique and surface systems have improved dramatically since then but at the time the technology used was leading edge.
TigerTurf prepared the scoria base using one of the first laser guided graders available. The first Regupol roll out rubber pad in NZ was installed under the surface, which once laid, held 180 ton of sand.
The installation commenced in February 1989 and was led by TigerTurf’s Technical Director, Don Crockett along with Peter Giles, a 26 year veteran at TigerTurf. The installation took six guys about three and a half weeks to complete the job.
Over the years the surface has required some repairs and experience algae problems from the ponds and trees next door but Don Crockett says the longevity of the playing characteristics of the surface were significantly enhanced through North Harbour’s commitment to keeping the field well maintained.
